Field notes

Things I built, and what they taught me.

Longer write-ups of one piece of work each: the problem as it looked at the time, the constraints that shaped the design, the diagram I wish I had had, and the details that bit. Newest first.

The series

Mocking the world, one provider at a time.

One owned surface in front of every third-party provider our integration environments talk to. Per request it mocks, forwards, calls us back later, or lets a running test answer live. Five diagrams on the resolution ladder, callbacks and the evidence trail.

Mapping the French state from public records.

Le Cercle turns four million Journal officiel appointments and a dozen open datasets into a map of who staffs the top of the French state. What it took to make the map trustworthy without editing a single row by hand.

Test environments as a product.

Every E2E suite eventually reinvents a worse database administration tool. Replacing ours with an API that owns state: run tokens, asynchronous teardown that recovers, and orphans you can see.
